Modularity Q&A

time January 24th by the Mother of Abominations

THE BEAST is growing in strength! We received 4 new modules last week, and we’ve been busy breaking them in.

We’ve recently received some questions online about the nature of THE BEAST, so we figured we’d just make a Q&A style post.

Q: WTF is THE BEAST you keep talking about?
A: THE BEAST is the name we’ve given to the Analog Modular Synthesizer we are currently constructing.

Q: What format are you guys using with your modular?
A: As mentioned in our blogs before, all of our modules use the Eurorack format. We may dip into other formats some day such as Frac, but for the moment our plans revolve around Euro.

Q: What modules do you guys have?
A: We currently have installed in our Doepfer G6 case:

Livewire - AFG VCO, Frequensteiner Filter, Vulcan Modulator
Doepfer - A-180 Multiples, A-132-3 Dual VCA, A-199 Spring Reverb
MFB - Dual ADSR, Dual LFO
Plan B - Model 9 mixer/attenuator
The Harvestman - Polivoks filter, Tyme Sefari

We are also waiting on a Harvestman Zorlon Canon to arrive in the mail, and plan on buying a Doepfer A-119, and A-189-1 very soon. That should completely fill our G6. We are also trying to get a hold of a stand alone Plague Bearer 4-banger filter unit by Flight of Harmony.

Q: How do you control/sequence your Modular?
A: We’ve been experimenting with many different ways. We have a Kenton Pro Solo mkII Midi to CV converter that we use in conjunction with our Virus Ti, Electribe, M-Audio Axiom, and even FL Studio to do sequencing and clock sends via an old M-Audio midisport. The possibilities are endless really, and depending on the situation, we can use anything that sends CV or Midi data.

Q: What is your favorite Module brand?
A: The Harvestman brand. They are making some really experimental and abrasive modules that are right up our alley in terms of sound design and deconstruction. Truly some chaotic and “industrial strength” type of modules here… we are not after the “perfect sine”. We are after innovation and versatility when it comes to our modular, and the Harvestman guys nail it on the head.

Q: Whats is wrong with digital, software, or VSTi synthesizers?
A: Nothing. We aren’t snubbing software for hardware, nor are we snubbing digital for analog. We aren’t purists of any sort. We will continue to utilize the best of both worlds just as we always have in the studio. We are just expanding our arsenal is all.

Thanks to those who are interested in what goes on behind the scenes in the studio with Prometheus Burning. We will try to keep everyone posted, and probably start posting more in depth reviews of certain gear and modules after we have some spare time. We currently have our hands full preparing for the IT AIN’T DEAD YET tour we will be embarking upon with Caustic and The Gothsicles starting in late March. And of course our newest album Plague called huMANity is about to be unleashed on Crunch Pod… so stay tuned!

Prometheus Burning studio 2009

time January 13th by the Mother of Abominations

Just a few sloppy shots showing the current state of the studio. We snapped the pictures rather hastily to post in a gearwhore thread on the Side-Line forums, and figured we might as well post them here too. You can see the progress of THE BEAST, our Eurorack modular that is growing more and more every day. We will take proper pictures some time soon when the studio is in less disarray, the modular more complete, and when Nick is there with his interesting hardware setup as well.
